Todays journey saw us joined by John Dahl, head of Sticky Bumps and lifelong surfer from the San Diego region. John joined me on my kayak and gave me a great historical guide of the stretch from Cardiff to La Jolla shores. Speaking of the once abundant shoreline filled with abalone and of being a young boy playing in the surf and tide pools all day without anyone needing to watch over him, and his parents never giving a second thought to him being on his own down by the sea all day. Things sure are different now John said. But there is still some openness to this stretch of coast with the Torrey Pines State Park affording us our first stretch of unoccupied terrain since we started our journey up in Gaviota north of Santa Barbara.
The day started off with a big pod of dolphins joining us as soon as we cleared the kelp beds half a mile out to sea. I had acquired a hydrophone recording device from Tom and Corey at Bio Waves and so dropped it into the water once the pod joined us. At the end of this song you can hear what I recorded. Listen to the very end of the track and you will hear the dolphins that call this stretch of coast home. Dealing with red tides, noise pollution, and marine debris, these dolphins have some challenges but still seemed to be curious and jovial when they met us out at sea bow riding and coming right under the kayaks.
Again, the song of the day came late in the night and felt like a great representation of our day.... hope these experiences are shared easily.

lyrics
V1
Third time lucky
So the saying goes
I’m more inclined to call it a learning curve
Finding my feet
On ever changing ground
Find my sea legs on the oceans churning
CH
Let her fly
Let the moment decide it
On a need to know basis
Trust & let it flow
V2
Sails set us free
Love & harmony
Open to the breeze
& the ancients of the sea
Kelp sways like trees
Helping us to breath
Deep canyon seas & the sun is shining
CH
Let her fly
Let the moment decide it
On a need to know basis
Trust & let it flow
(Guitar solo)
CH x2
Let her fly
Let the moment decide it
On a need to know basis
Trust & let it flow
